Tail sewing - HALP! Hi you all! I'm just embarking on the wonderful, yet often frustrating world of sewing fur. I made my first tail a couple weeks ago, and through the experience gained from that I'm now doing an art trade with someone by making her a small tail. (About 15") When I made my first tail, I hand sewed the pieces first to baste them together and then machine sewed alongside the hand sewing as a reinforcement. What I found (and I'm continually running up against now) is that if I machine sew very close to the basting, I get gobs and gobs of thread on the backside of the fur jamming the machine. (I've heard it called "spaghetti," for that's what it looks like!) On my first tail, I overcame this problem by sewing away from my hand stitching. It made for a much larger seam allowance than I wanted, but it worked. Now however, since I'm working on a much, much smaller tail, I can't have a gigantic seam allowance. That, and now no matter how for I would sew from the seam now anyway, I STILL get tons of spaghetti going on! So, my question is this: How do I stop all the thread from jamming up like that? I've heard it's an issue with tension, and I've tried that. (A tension of 4 was what worked before.) I've tried the machine on a test piece of normal fabric and it stitches normally, so I know the machine itself is okay. And I have been able to get a normal stitch on a test scrap of fur. Oh, and I'm using a size 14 needle. (I've changed the needle too, still have the same problem.) I've been working on this for HOURS and I can't seem to figure it out. Any help will be gratefully appreciated! Current Mood: frustrated |

Undulate Stilts Hey I'm Misfile and I need the help of the more technically astute builders. I'm making my first full suit of a character called Rook. She's a Dik-Dik. For those who don't know, that's just a really little antelope. Now I want to go all out for this one and make hoofer stilts. I've seen the videos for how to make digitagrade stilts, and they seem pretty straight forward. I, however, was hoping to make undulate stilts. ( Long Post is Long )Thanks for the help. P.S. If anyone knows an estimate on getting a piece of metal curved to the appropriate shape, that would also be fantastic. Current Music: The Beginning is the End is the Beginning |

Fixed the legs on the quad wolf i know i posted about this just yesterday (its after 12 am so its yeatserday XD ) but i decided to to make a new post rather than add new info to my already long post or any more pictures to the pic flood i added padding to the top of the hips i cut a slit in the legs above the knees and thus was able to move the whole leg down this in turn also pulled the fabric tight getting rid of the sharp connection to the body thus givving the whole thing a more natural curve. the lowered knee and ankle joing padding looks way better. i hand sewed in a patch of white fur into the gap i created above the knees and painted it to blend in. i added some long fur to the butt cheeks as well and some fur to the tops of the feet to make a more gentle angle between the toes and the leg i also re-padded the arm stilts as they were too big for the commissioners arms as i asked how big around their arm was and it is 10.5 inches and the dummy is 11 (i must of have over stuffed it somehow) i also lowered the tail as looking at photos of wolves they do not hold their tail up and lowering the tail also takes away some mobility issues as you no longer have to worry about it hitting anything well my last nit picky detail is i am debating on giving it a tummy tuck or not.... leaving it kinda chunky helps with the large chest to make the front legs look shorter issue...i think the tummy is fine actually my nitpick now is that i put a tuck in the neck and now it does not show from the side view and now all you see if the puff of fur on the lower jaw on on the chest where the fluff of the neck is upposed to meet up woth for a seamless look...i need to go undo that tuck well what i really need to do is wait untill at least the evenings get cool enough to put it on..... and i just hope it will look the same when worn as i have never stuffed a dummy in quad form before so i hope i did it right...i get a feeling that the neck will be quite a bit shorter when worn....*crosses fingers i am envious of these new arm stilts as mine SUCK these are much lighter, more comfy and eaiser to use than my first pair...too bad i am too friggen busy to make myself new ones ...seriously i have no other job so i spend 50%-80% of my waking life (the 60% being days i get supplies or go grocery shopping) working on commissions, i love it though and i have even lost weight as i am so busy i forget to eat XD i started my business up in late april and i lost 10 pounds without even trying...i fricken love my job, its like a dream come true (i need to shut up as ii am getting off topic :p |

This may be a completely stupid question.
Here's the deal. I keep getting STARTED on heads, then I dont finish 'em because they're not coming out how I wanted. SO what I'm doing now is starting on a new head, mesh frame, and I'm just gonna roll with where it takes me. I'm GENERALIZING canine, though I'd LIKE to go for a roo. Is this a terrible way to approach my 2nd head? D: |

Quadsuit wolf nearly done
EDIT/UPDATE: i am in the process of adding padding to the hind end and i also cut the top of one of the hind legs and thus i was able to move the knee down and the ankle down lower and it pulled the fabirc tighter which means the connection of the leg to the body looks better. the adjustments are all making it look much better (but now i have to sew a patch of fur in the hole i made...beh) and i may make the chest less deep but first i am fixing the legs ---------------------------------------- --------------- okay time to be burtally honest as i want this to look as reall as possible problems i see:well the hind legs look kinda funky or perhaps its that the waist looks too skinny? i dunno something about the hind end bothers me the head looks kinda small from a side view but looks fine from the front (i am NOT changing the head) the is a bad seam on the shoulder i need to fix the feet are a tad big but that can't be helped as the shoes have to fit the person (the toes are no longer than the shoe itself) and i went ahead and made the front feet match in sise any other nit picky details? here it is displayed on the dummy, i stil have to put it on and be sure it all fits and works right...but its been like over 100F this is only my second real quad suit my first was my wolf link cosplay http://www.beastcub.com/apps/photos/album.jsp?albumID=1090742 and as you can see i have come a long way the arm stilts are made for comfort and long term use, the wrist does no work at all as the tube comes up to the thickest part of the arm just below the elbow and your weight is supported by the heavily padded top of the tube, all your hand does is hold an elastic strap to be sure the tube does not slide off when lifted. i honestly came up with the idea all on my own after many years of trying and failing to make arm stilts the did not hurt my wrists...but later i found a quad kilala that used the same idea and it was was built before mine...so i no longer feel so orginal... there is a fan in the tail that blows over the wearers back the chest is not padded its just the fabric shaped and sewn and hang losely (manintains its shaope quit well) and there is a fan in the chest there is also a fan in each arm stilt with holes under the fur to vent and mesh patch you lift up to turn the fan on that also makes sure the fans get enough air both the underside of the front and back feet are fully furred and with raised thick rubber paw pads the jaw moves the tail tip is weighted to it swings a bit the feet, arm stilts, head(with huge neck ruffle) and body are sperate parts the velcro is attached to the left side of the chest so as you can actually open up the belly while on all 4s and velcro the other half of the tummy flap to the inside of the chest as you really cannot see this gap at all when standing and walking and the hair it lets in is a life saver, the suit can be worn in biped mode all it needs is some sleeves and hand paws the commissioner is lucky as i plan to charge alot more for quadsuits in the future as this took alot more work than a normal fursuit does nor did i anticipate just how much more work it would be as my wolf link quad was a glued together rush job.... |

Tails What is the best way to make a tail? Just any tail in general. I've been cutting my pattern and then flipping it so I have to pieces and then sewing them together. I'm made some pretty wacky shapes but I'm not sure if this is the best way to do it. Does anyone else make them like this, or do you do them differently? If so would you mind commenting on how you make YOUR tails? Many thanks. :3 |

Hey everyone. I just joined and I have a rather strange request. I have been looking for a particular stuffed animal for years and years, and I thought I'd start on the internet. Just doing a regular search hasn't helped me. For Easter of 1988, my grandmother bought me a small stuffed duck from Roses department store. I became attached to it instantly, and I've had it close to me ever since. After 20 years, it has become very worn. The tag is completely worn off, so I have no idea who made it. We tried calling the Roses headquarters a few years ago, but nothing came of it. So here's the challenge. I have a picture of the duck when it was still new. I would love dearly to find another duck like mine. If anyone can help me, I would appreciate more than you can know. I just want to know where I can find another one to buy. ( and here's my duck! )Also, if this kind of thing isn't appropriate for this community, can anyone direct me anywhere else where I can post my inquiry? Thanks so much everyone! |

What to use for Squirrel tail Since the obvious choice would've been Rust Fox Fur and that one being discontinued, what would you suggest I use to make a squirrel tail still look like a squirrel tail?
I beleive part of the solution is in the pattern (for which I'm also open to suggestions) but do you think I could get away with a shorter than 3" pile? The red fur I have right now is more like 1"... I'd need to find something to match it but still look as if a lil longer... |

Miscellaneous Qs Hey everyone :D
Well, my half-suit/partial (paws/tail/shirt) is almost done. It's been going in bits and pieces 'cause of my hectic work schedule and PC blowing.
What I've done is I've made the handpaws, and since it's a long pile fur (and I'll be working on the registers at work and moving around like crazy on Halloween before the children come by for treats in our community), I made the paws removable at the wrists and made sleeves that go nearly up to my armpits, which are also removable from the shirt itself. This way, if I overheat at work, I can take the fur-shirt off and throw on a short-sleeved shirt, and I'll have my paws/lower arms/mid-arms covered, so I won't spoil the illusion. I only have a few things left to get done...
Question time!
1) Ears. I have a short-haired purple wig and long, narrow furry ears that I made. I'd like to attach them via fishing line. Is this doable? How would I make the clasp for them to stay/tie on at the back of my head? I've seen this method with some costume horns at stores before around Halloween. I'd be adding poseable wire inserts into the ears to make 'em stand up straight if fishing line would work. Otherwise, should I just try a slim headband and attempt to hide it with some scrap fur?
2) Cooling. I have a spandex (or is it lycra? Can't recall offhand) unitard that I can wear underneath the fur-shirt. Now, with an AC on medium/6 temp control in 80 degree weather and without the unitard thing, I heat up within 10 minutes. I'm planning on making a vertical slice (since it's long fur, it'll hide it) and install a zipper or velcro (I'm thinking zipper, since I'll be moving a lot) in the side for easy on/off, since I'll have a wig, makeup, and all sorts of latex prosthetics on.
So how long, with ample water provided (I usually go through a 1.5 liter bottle in 5-7 hours at work normally), would fursuiters wisely be able to wear a fur-shirt with cool cotton/summer-weight pants on? I'm trying to figure out how long I can safely wear it before it's time to swap out of it and into the shirt. Character-wise, it would look like my character went from being shirtless to having a shirt on, so there's no worries there. :)
3) Hooves! I just had the -awesome- PunkCat of this community make me my first 'suit commission- a pair of gorgeous, clydesdale style-tufted cloven hooves for Versin. :) They were built on a pair of 2" tall high heels.
So here's another Q: Should I wear 'em around the house to 'break them in' like with normal walking/running shoes, or is that a no-no with high heels? Also, I'll be on even ground inside the store and on red brick sidewalks when I'm not- can anyone give me some experience stories about hooves so that I can better prepare myself for it, as well as how long feet can last in high heels before you get excruciating pain? I've got a pair of furry, 'normal' footpaws I made (as shown in previous entries) for when I need to switch out of 'em, but I'd like to wear Punk's hooves as long as I can! They're full of awesome.
Once everything's completed I'll post up pics of the final. I'm missing a fursuit head (broke!), but using latex appliances to cover for that and enable better flexibility for my job when I work or whenever I suit up.
Thanks so much, everyone. :) |

Hiding a zipper? I'm going to be sewing my bodysuit up tomorrow or the next day, or at least at some point in this week, but I'm having a major issue on how to cut the pattern out for a "hidden" zipper type entry-not sure if I should leave more fur on one side of the seam, or whatever. o_o Links to how to set up a hidden zipper is also great, considering I've never done it before. (diagrams are preferred, since I'm quite brain-dead currently.) I... uh, thought there was a section in the memories for this, but I couldn't find anything in it. Current Mood: sick |

coloring irises? (tips, suggestions, preference..) I finished my second pair of 'toony eyes and colored them the same way as my first, by painting with acrylic paint around the pupil. However, it's difficult to hide strokes, plus the paint chips fairly easily! and overall it just does not look as put-together as the rest of the head. so, what are some alternatives when doing irises? what different mediums, that sort of thing? er, anything eye-wise you find helpful would be appreciated, for future reference. :) Current Mood: blah |

Ida update Hey, Fursuit! Remember Ida, the... Iunno, dragon-thing? She's back, with a few improvements- I personally like her a lot, but I figured I'd post her for you guys to see. She's almost a complete partial now (I have the head, tail, and handpaws- I just need to do the feetpaws, which shouldn't take more than a few hours), and when she's done I'm planning on wearing her or my first partial for Halloween, since there aren't any cons where I live. Remember, before you crit- I happen to like this design a lot now with the changes made, so if the business of the maroon and blue swirls bothers you, it's a bit too bad. XD To each their own, right? If there's anything you can point out structurally (Like how to help fix a crooked jaw- I need some help with that one) or something that you think looks wrong in that strain, please say so! :3 (And, again, I really can't do anything with the ears. D: I know they're back too far, but it doesn't look too bad when she's actually being worn.) Anyway, now I post some pics... |
